Archaeology and Planning

Moss Carr, Methley

We are the archaeological advisors to the five metropolitan districts of West Yorkshire (Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield).

As part of this role we review all planning applications in West Yorkshire and give advice to the planning authorities on their potential archaeological implications. This includes applications involving standing historic buildings as well as subsurface archaeological remains.

We can also provide advice to developers and archaeological consultants who wish to find out more about the potential archaeological implications on their development site.

Early consultation is strongly encouraged as it provides much greater opportunities for designing schemes which will preserve rather than destroy significant archaeological remains.

The costs of archaeological recording is the full responsibility of the developer and by entering into discussions at an early stage, applicants may also be able to avoid requirements for major, and therefore expensive, archaeological investigations.

All advice is free and confidential. Some of our other development management services, however, do incur a fee - please see ‘services and prices’.
