Trading Standards Service

We aim to ensure that the people of West Yorkshire are well informed and empowered consumers who have the confidence to interact with businesses safely and securely, and that businesses in West Yorkshire are able to prosper by operating in an equitable and honest commercial environment.

Investigation of consumer complaints

We follow the National Trading Standards Board Intelligence Operating Model. This is designed to ensure that we address the issues which cause the highest levels of detriment to consumers and businesses in order to maximise the impact of our activities.

As we receive thousands of complaints each year, we prioritise the most serious cases and use the intelligence from others to inform our prevention and intelligence activities.

Our current priorities are set our in our Control Strategy, but we also consider the following when deciding which cases we investigate:

  • Level of consumer or business detriment (amount of money involved and number of consumers or businesses affected by the practice)
  • Vulnerability of the consumers targeted
  • Risk to safety & public health and wellbeing
  • Previous history of the business

Consumer complaints are made to our partner organisation, the Citizens Advice Consumer Service, who can offer you initial advice on obtaining redress and pass on the details of your complaint to us.

Market surveillance and advice to business

Part of our work involves carrying out routine, risk based inspections to businesses based in West Yorkshire, focussing on manufacturers and importers of consumer products.

As part of our inspections we offer advice on how to comply with legislation and best practice tips, but businesses can request advice from us at any time. We also operate the Primary Authority Scheme and have a variety of training courses we can provide to businesses.
