Welcome to West Yorkshire Trading Standards!

You may know something about us, but even if you don’t, you will know that West Yorkshire is a huge area of 2.3m people covering several large urban towns and cities.

The resident demographic is diverse as is the range of businesses based here. This all produces a significant challenge for trading standards and it is against this backdrop that we have been able to offer these new roles to substantially increase our statutory activity in the areas of food standards, weights and measures and product safety.

We’re a large service and deal with all aspects of trading standards, so it’s a great opportunity to expand your experience. We are an ambitious, focused, friendly and inclusive organisation, and are recognised for the important work we do. We have a large portfolio of Primary Authority businesses and want to create more capacity to support successful businesses through a variety of means. We have a large and wide ranging Calibration service, one of very few remaining in England, which is great to support the weights and measures work we do and want to increase. Whilst you’ll work in smaller teams, you’ll be expected to and have the chance to work across different areas as the need arises.

West Yorkshire Trading Standards is part of West Yorkshire Joint Services, a long standing and well regarded shared service delivering statutory services on behalf of 5 large metropolitan authorities.

We encourage all employees to have a healthy work/life balance and offer flexible working arrangements, such as agile working and flexi-time, together with a wide range of different working patterns, all subject to business need. We’re family friendly and offer generous maternity, adoption, paternity and parental leave, and provide for paid and unpaid special leave.

We also believe that our success depends on the commitment, integrity and skills of our staff and offer a rewarding environment, and provide colleagues with access to a learning and development programme to enable them to succeed in their role. We will also pay the annual membership fee for CTSI.

So you’ll get lots of support in terms of good IT with laptops and flexible working policies allowing homeworking or agile working which has worked really well over the last 12 months. The holiday allowance and flexitime scheme are generous to support a good work/life balance and if you’re living outside of West Yorkshire but thinking you might move to take on the right role, there is a relocation package on offer (subject to conditions as you would expect).

So, you’ve got this far, have a look at the documents we’ve put online to see more of what we do and if you’re still interested, which we hope you are then please give those named in the advert a call, depending on which role you’re interested in.

Good luck!
