Builders and Home Improvements

Builders looking at plans

The most common complaints in this sector relate to issues with substandard or defective work and failure to give or correctly observe cancellation rights when a trader visits a consumer in their home.

If you are considering having work done on or around your home you need to have confidence in the trader’s abilities and should choose carefully: use personal recommendations and ask for references, talk to previous customers, ask for 3 written quotes, agree a schedule of payments and never pay large sums up front. Consider members of Government-backed trusted trader schemes and Trade Associations offering insurance-backed guarantees.

IMPORTANT NOTE: contracts for the supply of goods which are made to consumer’s specification or which are clearly personalised are exempt and will not be cancellable, this will include made-to-measure double glazed windows.
