Bradford food shop in Court

Monday 20 October

On Friday 17th October 2025 at Bradford Magistrates Court, Taha Ali Said of SAN FOODS,  307-309 Legrams Lane, Bradford, BD7 2HX was fined £833, ordered to pay the prosecution costs of £1898.88 and a £333 victim surcharge having pleaded guilty to six offences under the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013.

Officers from West Yorkshire Trading Standards conducted a routine food standards inspection at SAN FOODS, 307-309 Legrams Lane, Bradford, BD7 2HX, on the 10th April 2025 and discovered 10 items of food past the use by date. The items of food collectively were 153 days past the use by date. The food items consisted of three packs of Kransno Debrecinske Parky that were each 9 days past the use by date, one pack of Farm Food Chicken Jumbo Sausage that was 12 days past the use by date, two packs of Finest Quality Chicken and Chorizo Bites that were each 13 days past the use by date, one pack of Finest Quality Hot & Spicy Meatballs that was 34 days past its use by date, one pack of Finest Quality Garlic Sausage that was 14 days past its use by date and two packs of Gazdovske Syrove Nite (non-English labelled food) that were each 20 days past the use by date.

Mr Said failed to respond to an interview under caution letter by Trading Standards, however following the service of the court summons he provided as mitigation via his solicitor a written Food Safety policy and a schedule indicating that staff had undertaken training in September 2025.

David Strover, Head of Trading Standards - Business Services  said “food businesses should  ensure that they undertake regular date checks on items bearing use by dates, they should invest in appropriate staff training and ensure food bearing a use by date is not exposed for sale after that date. It is the responsibility of food retailers to ensure such checks take place. Use by dates are placed on foods which are highly perishable from a microbiological view and are therefore likely, after a short period, to constitute an immediate danger to human health. Trading Standards will continue to take action against any businesses flouting the law.”

Councillor Sue Duffy, Deputy Chair of the West Yorkshire Joint Services Committee which oversees the work of Trading Standards said “Ensuring food safety is a fundamental responsibility of retailers. Selling food products past their use-by date not only undermines consumer trust but poses potential health risks. West Yorkshire Trading Standards is committed to protecting the public and tackling those businesses who supply unsafe food.”
