The Medieval Magnified

The Medieval Magnified exhibition takes a close-up look at the incredible medieval documents in our care revealing the stories of how they were made; why they were created; and the incredible journeys that brought them to West Yorkshire.

Family friendly Medieval craft holiday activities

Join us for a day of family friendly craft activities linked to our current exhibition, The Medieval Magnified. Learn about natural dyes and pigments, see the oldest document in our care (nearly 900 years old!) and make a medieval coin purse. No booking necessary, drop in anytime from 10am until 3pm. Free of charge but a £1 donation per family is encouraged to cover materials.

Free, drop-in Calligraphy taster session at West Yorkshire History Centre, Wakefield. Try your hand at modern hand lettering using a variety of pens and quills. This is a relaxed session, no experience necessary, all materials provided.

Bookbinding Workshop, Anne Lister Birthday Week, Calderdale Archives

Join the West Yorkshire Archive Service Conservation team who conserved the diaries of Anne Lister for a workshop learning how to make two of your own bound books! Learn all about the different types of bindings used for Anne Lister’s diaries and her travel journals as you create your own.

Anne Lister Codebreaker talk - John Abbott and his Halifax Legacy

In 2019, West Yorkshire Archive Service launched their Anne Lister Diary Transcription Project, with the aim of transcribing all five million words of Anne Lister’s diaries. The amazing transcription volunteers, the codebreakers, have spent countless hours transcribing Anne’s diaries. The codebreaker sessions will see some of the wonderful codebreakers share their extensive knowledge alongside a display of the original archive documents they gained this knowledge from.

Medieval style bookbinding at West Yorkshire History Centre

Wednesday 10 April 2024 (6:00 PM - 7:30 PM)
Come and have a go at sewing a simple medieval limp binding at West Yorkshire History Centre, Wakefield. Using recycled materials for the cover and leather to strengthen the spine, we will hand sew a book using similar techniques bookbinders from the middle ages would have used. All materials and instructions provided.
Join us for the opening of our new exhibition: A window on the West Riding - The John Goodchild Collection. Drop-in and explore some exciting discoveries from this fantastic archive collection, a treasure trove of local heritage collected over the lifetime of this eminent local historian.
Join us for a fun, family friendly exploration of balance, colour and shape using Annie Morris's sculpture outside the History Centre as inspiration! Take away your own mini stacked sculpture. No booking necessary, free of charge but a £1 donation per family is encouraged to cover materials.
A light-hearted introduction to the joys of copyright for researchers, family and local historians and lovers of history everywhere. If you're a writer, researcher or blogger who uses original source material in your work this workshop is for you! No prior knowledge necessary

Staff at West Yorkshire History Centre and members of the Wakefield Historical Society will be offering free talks, tours and opportunities to get hands-on with archival maps and celebrate 100 years of the Historical Society.
