To ensure emails sent to systems which do not support TLS data encryption standards can be safely received we are now using M365 Purview Message Encryption. You may receive a response to your email enquiry from a wyjs email account saying it has sent you a protected message. If you receive this response you will need to click on the Read the message link and follow the on-screen prompts to read the message, either by logging into the portal using your Microsoft account, your Google account, or by entering a one-time password that will be sent to your email address.

WYAS KIRKLEES IS NOW TEMPORARILY CLOSED

The West Yorkshire Archive Service’s Kirklees office is now closed to the public so that staff can prepare Kirklees’ archive collections for moving into their new home in Huddersfield’s Our Cultural Heart. Our new purpose-built archive facility will be part of the exciting new Huddersfield library which is due to open in 2026.

During this period of closure, the service will be offering a restricted remote enquiry service limited to essential/legal enquiries only in order to minimise disruption to the work to protect the archive collections. Unfortunately, we will be unable to respond to enquiries relating to academic, family history or local history research during this time. Kirklees Local Studies Library remains open. Local Studies offer access to local newspapers, trade directories, electoral registers and many other local and family history resources. You can contact them at localstudies.library@kirklees.gov.uk

Please note that we will be unable to accept new deposits of records into the archive during this closure period, except in cases where there is a significant risk of loss or harm to the material.

Facilities

An accessible toilet and baby change facilities are located on the premises. Please note that no food and drink can be consumed in the searchroom, but many cafes are located close by.
