Investigating our complex industrial past for Carillion Plc

Tuesday 11 July

Archaeological Services WYAS regularly undertake deep, complex excavations in urban environments. These sites offer particular logistical challenges that our staff are well-trained to meet.

In 2016, we conducted an archaeological strip and record on land formerly occupied by the Globe Iron Foundry in Holbeck, Leeds.

The Globe Works operated from the mid to late 19th century until it became part of the larger Tower Works complex. The archaeological works identified two machine stands interpreted as part of the wire manufacturing process, two gear wheel pits, powered by a rope race from the Engine House and also hot and cold flue systems, which probably discharged into the Giotto Tower.

Cartographic records and architects drawings were used to support the interpretation of the remains, most of which date from 1899.

The excavations were undertaken efficiently, both in terms of time and budget. This meant that the development was not delayed and the client could proceed as planned.
