We would love to win this award so please support the SAFER project by voting for us! It is vital that all victims of scams or doorstep crime are given a voice and have somewhere to go for help - winning this award would help raise our profile and will encourage people not to be ashamed or embarrassed about being a scam victim. What is the project?
The SAFER project is a community protection and empowerment programme, supporting older adults in Leeds and Bradford. The project aims to provide residents with the knowledge, skills and confidence to protect themselves against Doorstep Crime and Scams, and also to provide frontline advice and support to those already in crisis from such activity.
The project has delivered awareness raising community workshops to almost 4000 older adults since November 12 and delivered training to 1100 frontline workers from partner agencies and organisations. 92% of participants say they have a raised awareness and feel better able to deal with cold calls, scams and fraud, 92% also now have the confidence to identify legitimate traders and are more involved in community activities and a huge 94% have a reduced fear of crime since being involved.
The project also provides a specialised debt advice service for older people which has resulted in £205,000 worth of debt being written off and over £500,000 now being claimed in benefits, considerably improving the health and well being of many vulnerable people.
The project focusses on the following topics:
We are offering workshops to community groups and vulnerable people who may be susceptible to scams and frauds, free training to support agencies who may work closely with potential victims or maybe able to identify those at risk and also recruiting volunteers who can help us to spread the key messages and reach the more isolated members of the community.
