Tuesday 20th June - If walls could talk

 

A basic introduction into researching the history of your house. Suitable for absolute beginners, this course will guide you in finding more about the story of your home and the names of people who lived there.

Booking required, 6.30 – 8.30pm

Wednesday 5th July - Caring for your historic letters workshop

A beginner's workshop that will teach basic preservation and packaging skills to help you properly care for your historic letters. You will get he opportunity to make suitable packaging and you can bring in some of your letters for further advice / discussion

Booking required 10:00am - 3:00pm

£20 per adult

Please bring your own lunch, refreshments will be provided

New to using archives or stuck on a piece of research? Book a 45 minute slot with one of our archive team to help guide you through using our fascinating collections.

Friday 18th and Saturday 19th August - WYAS at Fountains Abbey

Beginnings and Benefactors: The Origin of Medieval Fountains Abbey

Hosted at Fountains Abbey, this is a chance to see original documents from 900 years ago, which reveal the early benefactors of the Cistercian Monks at Fountains Abbey. It will include West Yorkshire Archive Service's oldest document from c1135

Visit our new exhibition which explores our National Coal Board Collection telling some of the stories of coal mining in West Yorkshire.

New to archives? Not sure what archives are or how you can use them? Then this is the course for you. A six week evening course where you will explore the West Yorkshire Archive Service. Please see individual workshops below for more details.

Aimed at beginners with little or no experience. Using documents from the archives we will explore the quirks of seventeenth and eighteenth century handwriting. You will learn how to read and transcribe documents through numerous stunning examples and hands on practice

Tuesday 3rd October - Caring for photographs

An introduction to caring for photographs where you will learn the basics on storage, handling, care, packaging, advice on materials to use, and sources of more information. You can bring in your own photos for advice / discussion

Tuesday 10th October - Unlocking our institutions

This workshop explores how asylum, prison, reformatory schools and workhouse records can help with your family history

How to find us

West Yorkshire History Centre is a 300m walk from Wakefield Kirkgate Train Station.

 

It is situated on the A61 road with bus stops within a short walking distance on both sides.

 

Disabled Parking is available onsite.

 

The WMDC car park on Brunswick Street is pay and display (£2.50 per day) and offers free parking after 6:00pm.
