Saturday 11th February

Community open day

Help us celebrate the opening of the West Yorkshire History Centre. Find out who we are and what we do, enjoy family craft activities, guided tours, exhibitions and explore your local heritage. We will also be joined by Histrionics bringing characters from our First World War family to life.

Remembering the First World War, Family Activities

Family friendly craft activities inspired by our exhibition ‘A Family at War’. We are commemorating the centenary of the First World War telling the story of people from West Yorkshire living through the war.

What the heck are ‘Archives’? – An Introduction to Archives

New to archives? Not sure what archives are or how you can use them? Then this is the course for you. An absolute beginner’s introduction to historic archive collections, what they are, what they can tell us and how you can use them.

Wednesday 1st March

Marvellous Marbling workshop

A beginner’s session where you can have a go at the traditional decorative art of marbling and make you own decorative papers for bookbinding or other craft projects.

Booking required, 10am – 3pm

Please wear suitable clothing for messy activity and bring own lunch. Refreshments will be provided.

Tuesday 7th March

Growing your family tree

A basic introduction to researching your family tree. Suitable for absolute beginners, this course covers all you need to know about how to start your family history research, where to look and what to look at.

International Women’s Day Lunchtime Talk

Celebrate International Women’s Day with a fascinating talk on how women are represented in the West Yorkshire Archive Service collections. Refreshments will be provided.

Tuesday 14th March

If walls could talk

A basic introduction into researching the history of your house. Suitable for absolute beginners, this course will guide you in finding more about the story of your home and the names of people who lived there.

Tuesday 21st March

Capturing Coal Mining Memories and book launch

Did you or your family work in the coal mining industry and remember the early days of the Coal Board? The National Coal Mining Museum for England is collecting stories and memories to include in their new exhibition. Local expert and former miner Eddie Downes will be launching his new book Yorkshire Collieries 1947-1994 which will be available to purchase on the day.

Scoundrels and scallywags

Who’s lurking in the shadows of your family history? Join us for a look at some of the bad boys and girls of West Yorkshire, whether it’s an ancestor or you just want to know what life was like for prisoners, this course will help you follow their footsteps.

Insight into Archives

Our move to WYHC – David Morris and Jenny Brierley

Two of our archivists will explain how we moved 35 miles of archives across Wakefield from the Registry of Deeds into West Yorkshire History Centre without losing anything!

Is there an alien in your family history?

Join us for a snapshot into the journey of immigration in West Yorkshire in the 19th and early 20th century. Using the files of Leeds City Police, this session looks at the real life stories of people from all over the world who fled wars and oppression, those who settled here or simply passed on through.

Wednesday 29th March

Wakefield Art Walk

Stop off to see some fantastic handmade garments created by Wakefield and Barnsley Fashion and Textile College students and inspired by the First World War collections cared for by the Archive Service.

Tuesday 4th April

Caring for Photographs

An introduction to caring for photographs where you will learn the basics on storage, handling, care, packaging, advice on materials to use, and sources of more information. Can bring in own photographs for advice/discussion.

Saturday 8th April

Stitches in time

A textile artist will help participants design and embroider their own ‘postcard home’ taking inspiration from our First World War archive collections. You will learn basic hand sewing, embroidery techniques and stitches during this relaxed workshop.

All materials provided. Please bring a packed lunch.

Spring into the Archive, Family Activities

Family friendly craft activities where you can get creative with crafts inspired by spring and inspired by our archive collections.

Brilliant Bookbinding workshop

A beginner’s session where you can have a go at traditional bookbinding techniques and try your hand at Japanese stab binding and make and take home your own handmade blank notebook.

Thursday 18th May

Your Archive Needs You – Museums at Night

Come and explore WYHC after hours and discover how the people of West Yorkshire lived in the First World War. There will be music, poetry, games, crafts and vegetable planting as you try out some of the ways people helped the war effort and kept up morale.

History Wardrobe presents Great War Fashion

Join author and costume historian Lucy Adlington for this inspiring insight into the lives and aspirations of women in the First World War, as revealed through their clothes.

How to find us

West Yorkshire History Centre is a 300m walk from Wakefield Kirkgate Train Station.

 

It is situated on the A61 road with bus stops within a short walking distance on both sides.

 

Disabled Parking is available onsite.

 

The WMDC car park on Brunswick Street is pay and display (£2.50 per day) and offers free parking after 6:00pm.
