An update on the temporary closure of Calderdale Archives – Expected Reopening July / August 2018

The Calderdale Archives is currently closed to carry out its move to the new Central Library and Archives building in Halifax. The collections are now being transferred to the new strongroom and we hope to be able to reopen in July / August 2018. We will provide updates on exact reopening dates as soon as possible.

Calderdale Archives intended to relocate to the new Central Library and Archive buildings in Halifax soon after the facility was opened last September. Unfortunately there has been a delay with the moving of delicate archive records due to the purpose built strong room (the room where we keep all of our archived material) not having the correct levels of temperature and humidity.

Whilst this is disappointing, we are working with Calderdale Council and their building contractors to move towards a prompt resolution so that we can reopen to the public. During our temporary closure we are unable to operate our normal enquiry service and we apologise for this. However, as Calderdale Archives are part of West Yorkshire Archive Service, we can provide services that do not require direct access to the Calderdale collections. We also have an online catalogue that can be accessed via

In the meantime, if you have any queries relating to the service we provide then please don’t hesitate to contact us by email or call 0113 535 0151.

We will update this page as soon as we have a progress update on the conditions of the strong room. As a service we are really looking forward to completing the move into the new building, which is located on the Square Church site next to the Piece Hall. More information on the building can be found here.
