Please note that the Calderdale Archives will now be closed until March 2018.

This closure is to relocate to the new Central Library and Archives in Halifax. We will provide updated dates for our reopening as soon as possible.

We apologise for the extended closure due to delays at the construction stage of the project, including drying the strongroom structure and settling the controlled environment to ensure the permanent preservation of our collections

During our closure Archive Staff will be unable to operate our normal enquiry service.

  • If you have a general enquiry which can be answered from another office please email Unfortunately we will not be able to answer general enquiries which require direct access to the Calderdale collections.
  • If your request is for a legally required search please send your request to providing full details of what you require and a member of staff will consider your request and respond as soon as possible.
  • Our online catalogue can be accessed via our website\archives.
  • Many family history records are now available on Ancestry. We have worked in partnership with Ancestry to digitise, index and make available on their website ( millions of copies of original records held with us.

Microfilm available
Archive service microfilm will be available via the Reference and Local Studies Library in the Central Library at the following times;

Monday 9.30am to 6.30pm
Tuesday 9.30am to 6.30pm
Wednesday 9.30am to 12.30pm
Thursday: 9.30am to 6.30pm
Friday: 9.30am to 6.30pm
Saturday: 9.30am to 4.00pm

Reader Registration

We are members of the County Archive Research Network (CARN) readers’ ticket scheme. Please bring your CARN readers’ ticket with you when you visit. If you do not have a ticket please bring official proof of ID which includes your name, address and signature.


Please contact us by telephone (01422 392636) or by email prior to planning your visit. Staff will advise you on whether to reserve a table, a computer or a microfiche reader, depending on which records you wish to consult. A small proportion of our collections are held off-site and can take up to 5 working days to be made available to researchers.

Please note that if you would like to view original archive material an appointment is necessary.

Group Talks and Workshops

A range of talks are available to groups and organisations who would like to find out more about our Archive Service. In our talks we aim to explain the work we do and help to raise public awareness of our collections and expertise. We offer many different talks, details of which and how to book can be found here.


No refreshment facilities available in the building but cafes etc are close by.
Toilets available please ask staff for the key.

Car Parking

Short stay car parking at the Woolshops Shopping Centre.  

Long stay at North Bridge Leisure Centre, off North Bridge.  

Disabled parking is available in front of the library.


We are approximately 500 metres from Halifax Railway Station.

About the Office

The archive service in Halifax was established in 1964, building on foundations laid by the Halifax Museums Service, local public libraries and the Halifax Antiquarian Society. It moved to its present purpose-built accommodation in the Halifax town centre in January 1983. Calderdale joined the West Yorkshire Archive Service in April 1983.
